Due Process Policy

The Wayne State University Library System (WSULS) exists to offer students, faculty, staff and visitors a safe and intellectually rich environment in which to study, collaborate and engage in a broad spectrum of academic pursuits.

In response to concerns expressed by many library patrons and our own observations pertaining to policy adherence, WSULS will strictly enforce its policies to ensure that the libraries remain a comfortable, safe environment for all.

WSULS, in collaboration with the Dean of Students Office (DOSO), the Department of Public Safety, and the General Council, has adopted a "zero-tolerance" position towards continued behavior that violates both the letter and spirit of the WSU Student Code of Conduct and the WSULS Standards of Behavior Policy.

Policy Enforcement Procedures

For WSU Students

Failure to comply with WSULS policies or provide WSU OneCard will result in police notification and may result in Student Code of Conduct violation(s).

Step One: Verbal Compliance Request

Authorized library personnel will verbally request immediate compliance with WSULS policies.

  • Students must provide their active WSU OneCard to authorized personnel, upon request.

Step Two: Temporary Ban

Failure to comply with a Step One request, or a "zero-tolerance" violation, will result in a written 24-hour ban from the library building in which the violation took place. Alternatively, this ban may be limited to a loss of student computer access.

  • Students must provide their active WSU OneCard to authorized personnel, upon request.
  • A copy of the temporary ban letter will be forwarded to the DOSO Student Conduct Officer and the WSU Department of Public Safety.

Step Three: Indefinite Ban

Failure to comply with WSULS policies, after a Step 2 action, will result in an indefinite ban from all WSULS libraries, pending the outcome of the Student Conduct Hearing. Alternatively, this ban may be limited to a loss of student computer access.

  • Students must provide their active WSU OneCard to authorized personnel, upon request.
  • A copy of the indefinite letter will be forwarded to the DOSO Student Conduct Officer and the WSU Department of Public Safety.
  • A Student Conduct hearing will take place and reinstatement of library privileges will be evaluated after the hearing.

For Non-WSU Students

Failure to comply with WSULS policies may result in criminal trespass charges and/or arrest.

Step One: Verbal Compliance Request

Authorized library personnel will verbally request immediate compliance with WSULS policies.

  • Patrons must provide a state-issued photo ID to authorized personnel, upon request.

Step Two: Temporary Ban

Failure to comply with a Step One request will result in a written 24-hour ban from all WSULS facilities.

  • Patrons must provide a state-issued photo ID to authorized personnel, upon request.

Step Three: Permanent Ban

Continued violations of WSULS policies or "zero-tolerance" violations will result in a written permanent ban from all WSULS facilities.

  • Patrons must provide a state-issued photo ID to authorized personnel, upon request.

Violation information will be retained for one (1) year

"Zero-Tolerance" Violations

"Zero-Tolerance" violations may result in immediate Step 2 or Step 3 actions.

Examples of "Zero-Tolerance" behaviors include, but are not limited to:

  • Reckless, knowing or intentional violations of WSULS or University policies
  • Loud, threatening, or abusive language
  • Disorderly conduct or other criminal behavior
  • Refusal to provide proper identification to authorized WSULS personnel
  • Repeated violations of WSULS Food Policy
