Fire Emergency Procedures

Fire Response
  • If you smell smoke in the library, investigate, and pull fire pull if necessary.
  • If you see a fire, pull the fire pull, if the alarm isn't already sounding. The fire alarm automatically notifies the Department of Public Safety. Call Public Safety directly at 7-2222 if you SEE a fire. Do not call 911.
  • If the alarm fails to operate, staff should warn other library staff members and users. Staff (Access desk at Adamany Undergraduate Library; Purdy Circulation desk for Purdy Kresge Library; Circulation desk for Science and Engineering Library) will use the PA to announce the fire.
  • When the fire alarm sounds, stay calm and follow this Emergency Response Plan.
  • Get everyone out of the building. See building specific evacuation plans below.
  • Call Public Safety at 7-2222 from a safely located phone. Give as much information as possible to the dispatcher. Do not assume that someone else has already contacted them. Do not hang up until told to do so by the dispatcher.
General Considerations
  • Library elevators do not function during a fire alarm. Evacuees must use stairwells.
  • The Emergency Response Team member will direct the response for his/her floor. An alternate is assigned to each floor to ensure total coverage during an emergency or fire drill.
  • Staff with work assignments/offices on each floor should evacuate that floor if possible (except nights/weekends) and should not depend on help from other staff on other floors. If there are no other alternatives, Emergency Team member should be prepared to "draft" volunteers from among library patrons in their area and quickly assign responsibilities.
  • If patrons are able to leave the area, have them do so immediately. Emergency Team members are required to stay until patrons are cleared.
  • Special considerations have been made for evacuation of handicapped persons (see building specific evacuation plans below).
  • If you exit the building, direct Public Safety and/or firefighters to the fire when they arrive.
  • After leaving the building, stand clear. Follow the directions of Public Safety and firefighters. Do not reenter the building until the Fire Department or Public Safety has declared it safe.
Fire Survival Skills
  • When a fire alarm sounds, evacuate the building immediately. Do not stop to gather personal belongings.
  • Enclosed stairwells are safer than central stairs. They should be used for evacuation whenever possible.
  • If smoke, heat or fire blocks your exit, go to an alternate exit.
  • If you are trapped, break a window using a chair or other similar object and hang a jacket, shirt or other object out the window that will attract attention. Shout for help. Or:
  • Call Public Safety on a phone and tell them that you are unable to get out of your area. Tell them how many people are with you. Public Safety will be in direct radio contact with officers at the fire. Remain calm until firefighters reach you from the hallway or window. Their first duty upon arriving at a fire is to search for persons trapped in the building.
  • Before opening any internal door, feel it with the back of your hand. Do not exit unless the door is cool. If the door is hot, do not use it. Instead, find an alternate door.
  • Close all doors behind you as you exit. This will retard the spread of smoke and lessen damage.
  • If smoke is present, keep low to the floor. Take short breaths to avoid inhaling any more smoke than necessary.
