Supporting research at WSU is one of the core missions of the WSU Libraries. This research guide highlights resources of interest to WSU researchers including online tools, training opportunities, and library services to support research activities. Browse this guide or contact your library liaison to learn more about resources and services that support research at WSU.

Liaison Librarians - Each academic department/college at WSU is assigned a professional librarian liaison that can be contacted to discuss library resources and services designed to meet the research needs of your department or college. Suggest a Title - Your liaison librarian can order new resources in your field, or you can use the link above to suggest a title for purchase by the libraries.

Research Guides - WSU Liaison Librarians have prepared research guides for each subject area to highlight frequently used and best resources for conducting research in a given discipline.

Research Funding Opportunities – The WSU Division of Research provides a range of information on internal funding opportunities, corporate and foundation funding, searching for funding and more.

COS Funding Opportunities – A comprehensive searchable database of funding information that includes government, foundation and corporate funding opportunities.

Training Opportunities

Division of Research Seminars and Training – The WSU Division of Research offers a variety of training opportunities related to research for faculty, postdocs and graduate students.

Scholarly Writing Workshops for Graduate Students – The Wayne State Writing Center ( offers one-on-one tutoring sessions and in-class workshops to promote the development of scholarly writing skills.

Research Consulting - The Research Design and Analysis Unit ( ResearchDesignandAnalysisConsulting) provides free assistance with the design of research projects and the statistical analysis of data to Wayne State University faculty, staff, post-doctoral students, and graduate students.

Keeping Current

Guide to Alerting Services - Many online journals and databases offer alerting services that notify subscribers of new issues of a journal or new results from a search. This guide describes various alerting services and provides links to publishers offering these services.

NIH RePORTER - A database of federally funded biomedical research projects that can be searched for scientific concepts, emerging trends and techniques, or specific projects or investigators.

Writing Resources

Graduate Student Writing Resources – This website from the WSU Graduate School provides a variety of resources to assist graduate students writing dissertations, articles, theses, grant proposals, and prospectuses.

Writing Workshops – The Wayne State Writing Center ( offers one-on-one tutoring sessions and in-class workshops to promote the development of scholarly writing skills.

Managing Citations – EndNote is a citation management software package that WSU has made available to all WSU faculty, staff and students.

Publishing Resources

NIH Public Access Policy – This website is designed to help NIH grant recipients at WSU comply with NIH reporting requirements.

Journal Citation Reports – This resource allows users to determine the Journal Impact Factors for over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals in the sciences and social sciences.

Instructions to Authors in the Health Sciences – This website links to web pages that provide instructions to authors for over 3,500 journals in the health and life sciences.

Journal Abbreviation Sources is a registry of Web resources that list or provide access to the full title of journal abbreviations.

Author's Rights

Your article has been accepted for publication in a journal. You'd like the widest distribution of your research, as it represents the culmination of years of research and hard work. Today you have other options than just print publication, like online archiving, but the publication agreement you’ll likely encounter will actually prevent broad distribution of your work. Most standard publishing agreements ask you to give away control of your copyright, limiting the future use of your article. Under a standard agreement, you may not be able to post your work to your personal website, re-use sections in later works, archive your article in DigitalCommons@WSU, e-mail your article to colleagues, or post your article to BlackBoard for a class reading assignment.

WSULS would like to help you regain control of your work and your rights as an author. Below are some resources and templates we've put together than can help you get started in this process.

SPARC Resources for Authors – Learn more about your rights as an author from the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition.

SHERPA/RoMEO Publisher Copyright Policies – This website allows users to search for a summary of permissions that are normally given as part of each publisher's copyright transfer agreement. Use this site to determine what your rights are for previously published works, or to find publishers with standard agreements that allow you to retain the rights you need for your uses.

Scholar's Copyright Addendum Engine – Complete the form below to generate a PDF form that can be attached to a journal publisher's copyright agreement to ensure that the authors retain certain rights.

How to Use Copyright Addendum

  1. Complete addendum in form above
  2. Print a copy, sign and date, attach it to your publication agreement.
  3. Sign and date publisher agreement, under signature add “Subject to attached addendum.”
  4. Note in a cover letter to publisher you have added an addendum, staple all three documents together
  5. Make copies
  6. Mail originals to publisher

DigitalCommons@WSU Permissions Template - Use this WSU specific permissions template to request from your publisher the permissions to archive your published article in DigitalCommons@WSU.
