Study Rooms

Study rooms are meant to provide spaces for quiet collaboration.

Study Rooms Use Policy

Policies for use of Wayne State University Library System study rooms.

  1. Open study rooms available first come first serve to anyone. Minimum occupancy required.
  2. Locked study rooms available only to WSU students, faculty, staff. Minimum occupancy required.
    1. Law Library: Only WSU Law students may use the Law Library study rooms.
  3. Keys signed out 3 hours at a time. One three hour renewal allowed providing no other group waiting.
  4. If there is a minimum occupancy, at least that number of patrons must appear at the circulation desk to receive the key.
  5. Reservations
    1. Shiffman Medical Library (pdf) : Are required and must be made at least 3 hours in advance.
    2. Law Library: Only during reading and exam periods, and open only to Law Students.
    3. All other libraries are first come first served.

Violation of these rules will lead to loss of group study room privileges.

Event Rooms

Rooms Available:

  • Community Room (3rd floor David Adamany Undergraduate Library, seats 50-80 people, w/tables and chairs)*,†
  • Special Collections Room (3rd floor David Adamany Undergraduate Library, seats 30 people, w/tables and chairs)
  • Community Room and Special Collections (3rd floor David Adamany Undergraduate Library, combines two above)*,†
  • Bernath Auditorium  (seats 150, 1st floor David Adamany Undergraduate Library)
  • Kresge Auditorium (seats 100, 1st floor Purdy/Kresge Library)
  • Bernath Seminar Room ** (seats 16, 3rd floor David Adamany Undergraduate Library)
  • The Leonard Simons Room is not available for group study or practice sessions at any time.

* Food is allowed to be served in Community Room, but not placed on any glass display cases.  Food is not allowed in any other room or in either auditorium
** Reservable by Faculty/Staff only.
† $100 fee required. Booking will not be confirmed until this fee is received (either IRB, check or cash).

Classroom Instruction in Library Rooms:

Faculty/Instructors are welcome to make use of the library’s available event rooms to supplement their classroom activities. Computer instruction labs and auditoriums may be used as well. Media Services fees can be waived for such classroom activity in the libraries. No more than three reservations in any single room, including computer labs, are allowed in any semester to support a class.

Special Events:

The library system encourages faculty, students, campus and student organizations and the community to make use of its facilities for educational or cultural activities, conferences, meeting space, and other events not specifically designated as a “class.”  The following are general guidelines for appropriate usage and instructions for reserving the room. 


Faculty/Staff:

  • Reservations: Request rooms in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library by calling (313) 577-8854.  Kresge and Bernath Auditoriums are booked by calling (313) 577-1980. 
  • A single contact person must be identified for events, and only that contact person may request changes to a scheduled event.
  • Equipment: If an event requires the use of media equipment, call (313) 577-1980 to request a Special Event Media Request form.  Fees may be assessed, must be paid 1 business day prior to event, and can be paid with IRB, cash, check and credit card in the Technology Resource Center in Purdy/Kresge Library.
  • Restrictions: No more than three reservations in any single room are allowed in any semester to support a group, conference or to be used as University Department meeting space.


Student Groups:

  • Reservations: Student organizations are required by University Policy to go through the Reservations office of the Student Center and Program Activities Department (Room 573, Student Center) to request a room to hold an event on campus.  See Reservation Policies and Procedures , page 15, Student Organizations Information Manual.
  • A single contact person must be identified for events, and only that contact person may request changes to a scheduled event.
  • Equipment: If an event requires the use of media equipment, call (313) 577-1980 to request a Special Event Media Request form.  Fees will be assessed, and must be paid 1 business day prior to event.  Fees can be paid with IRB, Cash, Check and credit card in the Technology Resource Center in Purdy/Kresge Library. 
  • Fees:  A $50 cancellation fee is assessed if the group fails to cancel an unneeded reservation at least 24 hours in advance. 
  • Restrictions: Student Groups who violate room booking policies will be prevented from booking library spaces for at least one semester.


Community Groups:

  • Reservations: Request rooms in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library by calling (313) 577-8854, or coming to the David Adamany Undergraduate Library Check Out desk.  The Bernath Auditorium or the Kresge Auditorium are reserved by calling (313) 577-1980.  Reservations are limited to 3 uses per semester per Community group.  
  • A single contact person must be identified for events, and only that contact person may request changes to a scheduled event.
  • Equipment: If an event requires the use of media equipment, call (313) 577-1980 to request a Special Event Media Request form.  Fees will be assessed, and must be paid 1 business day prior to event.  Fees can be paid with IRB, Cash, Check and credit card in the Technology Resource Center in Purdy/Kresge Library. 
  • Fees:  Community Room: $50 per usage; Auditorium $150 per usage.  A $50 cancellation fee is also assessed if the group fails to cancel an unneeded reservation at least 24 hours in advance.  A $50 custodial services fee may be assessed if extensive cleanup is required after the event.
  • Restrictions: Evidence of tax exempt status may be requested.

Restrictions on usage: 

  • Noise:  Since library users are studying throughout the building, we reserve the right to refuse any request based on our impression of the likely noise level expected from the event. 
  • Monetary Gain:  No library facility may be used for commercial/sales events or by for-profit organizations.  No admission fee may be charged, nor donation requested for any activity taking place in the libraries.
  • Movie Showing:  No film or video may be shown in any Library without proof of public performance rights, except where shown in conjunction with a WSU class, and in compliance with copyright laws.  Written notice of performance rights must be presented at the same time that payment is received, (at least one business day in advance of performance) or the performance will be cancelled. 
  • Equipment:  If an event requires the use of media equipment, call (313) 577-1980 to request a Special Event Media Request form.  Fees may be assessed for assistance and equipment usage.
  • Food: Food is not allowed in any room except the Community Room in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library
  • Room usage:  groups must leave rooms clean and furniture arranged as they found it.  We reserve the right to assess a $50 cleaning fee if needed.
