The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Gets a New Look

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Beginning in August 2007, OVID CINAHL(Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) will be replaced by CINAHL (EbscoHost), a new vendor that has purchased CINAHL. CINAHL (EbscoHost) provides indexing for over 2,857 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. The database contains more than 1,000,000 records dating back to 1982.

What does that mean to our patrons?

CINAHL’s (EbscoHost) graphic interface will be a bit different than what you used to see as OVID. The searching abilities are similar and will offer you the same excellent information that you were used to getting when using OVID. To make the transition as easy as possible, the new EbscoHost version will be taught in all library instruction sessions to nursing faculty and students this summer and fall.

Will I have to access the database differently?

No, you can still access it right from the Library System’s Articles and Databases section on the Web site at (EbscoHost CINAHL). You will access the new EbscoHost CINAHL version the same as the old version (OVID). Go to the “Articles and Databases” list on the Library System home page, go to the “C” databases and click to enter the new EbscoHost CINAHL. The search screen you will see is a little different than the previous version, but all of the searching capabilities are still available. That is, searching is still available by keyword, subject, author, journal title and CINAHL subject headings. You can also limit to peer reviewed or research articles in a particular time frame and language, and other limits.

If you have any questions about EbscoHost CINAHL, please contact Nancy Wilmes at

Looking for a speedy way to request and receive articles? Try ArticleReach!

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

The Library System is pleased to now offer our patrons access to ArticleReach Direct, a service that allows students, faculty and staff at WSU to request and receive full text electronic scans of articles that we do not own at WSU. It’s a speedy method of requesting articles and receipt of the articles, with a notification sent into the requestor’s e-mail box. When looking through our databases for article citations and find articles that we do not own, users can place the request with the click of a button, and after authenticating and identifying themselves, the request will automatically forward to the ARL libraries in this pilot program.

The easiest way to use ArticleReach Direct is to search for journal articles using resources listed on the WSU Articles & Databases Web page. All resources available to WSU students and faculty are listed there. An icon will indicate that the database that you’re searching uses ArticleLinker and will provide a menu of options for locating a full-text journal article.
